SOURCE :     TIME: 2020-05-29

On May 28, 2020, Jilin University School of Law invited Prof. Zezekalo Alexander,  visiting professor of our school and the associate professor of Faculty of Law, St. Petersburg University in Russia, to deliver an online lecture about "Introduction to Russian Civil Law". Hosted by Prof. Xirong Ren, the Deputy Dean of School of Law, the lecture attracts postgraduates majoring in civil and commercial law.

Prof. Zezekalo Alexander briefly introduced the history of Russian civil law from its origin, and further illustrated its framework. Then he analyzed the challenges that impeded civil law development in Russia, for instance, the dilemma of encouraging private capital in the context of socialism. Taking the 1955 Russian Civil Code as an example, Prof. Zezekalo Alexander summarized its components, explained its general principles, provisions on ownership, law of obligation, and natural person, and commented on the changes of articles and relevant academic arguments. In the Q&A part, students discussed limited capacity for civil conduct with Prof. Zezekalo Alexander. In the end, Prof. Xirong Ren shared the news with Prof. Zezekalo Alexander that the Civil Code was formally approved in China, which is a milestone in Chinese legal advancement.

The online lecture and interaction with international scholars are popular among students.  Specially with Civil Code adopted in China, the introduction of Russian civil law provides inspirations for comparative legal studies.
